China to Launch New Military Drills Near Taiwan

The People’s Republic of China is planning to conduct military maneuvers around Taiwan, citing an upcoming speech by the island’s President Lai Qingde, timed to coincide with a national holiday, Reuters reported, citing Taiwanese officials.

A senior Taiwanese security official said the drills could take place regardless of the content of Lai’s speech, which is scheduled for October 10, the 113th anniversary of the Republic of China. At the same time, diplomatic sources in Taipei indicate that tensions could ease due to the upcoming US presidential election.
